MADRID, 6 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Spanish adapted surfing team goes to the Californian beach of Pismo Beach with the desire to shine again in the World Championship, which will be held from this Tuesday to Saturday the 11th, and in whose last edition it achieved eight medals and was proclaimed champion by equipment.

In March 2020, just as Spain was preparing to close due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, national surfers made history in this event by winning a historic team title ahead of the United States and Brazil.

All thanks to the great performance of its athletes, led by Aitor Francesena, known as ‘Gallo’, and Carmen López, who were proclaimed world champions in the category for the visually impaired 1.

Along with them, they also left California, on that occasion from La Jolla beach, with some success Marcos Tapia, silver in Prone 1, Paloma Oñate (Kneel) and Celia Gramse (visual impairment 2), bronzes, and Ibon Muguerza (Stand 1), María Martín-Granizo (Stand 2) and Audrey Pascual (Kneel), copper medals that are awarded to the fourth classified in this event.

Now, for this World Cup, the national coaches Luis Pérez and Lucas García have summoned 16 athletes, a greater number than more than a year and a half ago and with new faces. Of the 2020 medalists, Francesena and López repeat, who will have to defend their respective titles although the Asturian does not arrive at her best, Gramse, Martín-Granizo and Pascual.

Together with them will be Sarah Almagro, Catalina Alomar, Ángel Curiel and Ánder Goenaga, in Prone 2, Joseba Mercader (Stand 1), Mireia Cabañes and Xavier Ayestarán (Stand 2), María Díaz (Kneel), Ion Artola (Sit), Juan Manuel Ramajo (Visually Handicapped 1), and Óscar Pérez (Visually Handicapped 2).
