The RFEDI presents a team of 44 athletes for the 2022-2023 season

MADRID, 19 May. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Royal Spanish Winter Sports Federation (RFEDI) has presented this Thursday the official list of Spanish athletes who will be part of the sports structures for the next 2022-2023 season, with an increase of 20%, going from 35 to 44 members, as reported in a statement.

Thus, the Federation highlights the growth in the number of athletes in its structures, going from 9 in the 14-15 season to 24 during the 17-18 academic year, to reach 30 a year later to almost fifty who will compete for Spain in 2023.

“This increase has been possible, among other factors, thanks to the growing push of young talents and the work carried out with the National Sports Modernization Plan and the coordination with the regional federations, clubs and private teams. In addition to the economic improvement of the entity especially with regard to own resources (sponsorships)”, stressed the RFEDI in said statement.

In the list, divided into the three usual team levels according to ranking A, B, C, in addition to the Development Groups, the increase in cross-country skiing stands out, which has grown exponentially with 113 percent, going from having 3 athletes to have 7 in the 22-23 season. In Mushing, there has also been an increase, going from 5 to 9, 80 percent more, and in alpine skiing, with two more athletes than last season, which means 25 percent. Freeski and speed skiing maintain the same number of participants.

This season’s teams are made up of 72 per cent men and 28 per cent women. “We are working both with the regional federations and clubs and from the Women and Snow program to continue bringing Spanish winter sports closer to the desired 50-50 gender balance,” said the RFEDI.

In addition, this season 12 new young talents have been incorporated -6 in alpine, 4 in cross-country skiing and 2 in snowboarding-. The youngest athlete that forms the structure of the RFEDI is Valeria Guiridi, from 2005, and the oldest of the Federation, Lázaro Martínez, from 1963, both mushing competitors.

The national team will continue to have established athletes such as Queralt Castellet (silver in ‘Halfpipe’ in Beijing 2022), Lucas Eguibar, and Quim Salarich, and other new talents under 21 years of age such as Tomás Barata, Jaume Pueyo, Alvaro Romero, Arrieta Rodríguez, among others.

In summer and autumn, the RFEDI foresees a “strong reinforcement” of the sports program and technical team that allows achieving “the highest objectives of recent decades”, pursuing outstanding classifications in Junior World Championships, World Cups and also absolute World Championships that are scheduled to be played in 2023.

Additionally, and outside the structures of the federation itself but with its logistical and economic support thanks to the National Plan for Sports Technification (PNTD), work will continue with the Monitoring Groups. It is an open and dynamic group of athletes made up of 25 new talents from snowboarding, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing and biathlon.

The general and sports director of the RFEDI, Olmo Hernán, commented that “the expansion of the list is very good news, especially due to the level of the athletes who access it”. “The challenge now is to provide programs of higher quality each year and with good technical teams. That is the key, to properly use the available tools, which, even though they are scarce, can be used to great effect with strategy and planning,” he concluded. .
