Brittain, 57, will take over from Peter McCormick, interim president of the Premier League since January after Gary Hoffman resigned in November following the hostile reaction of the clubs to the purchase of Newcastle by a Saudi Arabian investment fund.

Brittain will step down as chief executive of Whitbread at the beginning of 2023, a group of hotels and restaurants that she came to after a professional career that began in banking, a sector in which she was director of the board of Santander UK. She was also recently elected president of Dubnelm, a home furnishings retailer.

Football fan since childhood

“I have been a football fan since childhood and I am absolutely delighted to be elected president of the Premier League,” Brittain said in the statement. “It will be a real privilege to be able to help develop plans for the future and work with all the key stakeholders in football to ensure its long-term sustainability and success.”

For your part Richard Masters, executive director of the Premier League, stresses that “Alison has had a positive impact on all the organizations she has been in (…) She has an excellent track record in the business world, she brings projects to life with a no-nonsense style and is respected and appreciated in every industry in which she has worked.”
