The New York Giants put Tommy DeVito on the bench and put Tyrod Taylor in his place.
The New York Giants put young quarterback Tommy DeVito on the bench and started Tyrod Taylor in the second half of Monday’s 33-25 loss of the Philadelphia Eagles that Lincoln Financial Field.
The change was made because the Giants were not doing very well in the first half, and they only had 101 yards along with three points.
It stopped everything about DeVito right away. The quarterback who wasn’t picked in the draft had grown into a fan favorite and a famous underdog story.
At the news conference after the game, coach Brian Daboll said that his goal was to “just attempt to ignite the team.” There’s not much more I can say. I did it to get the team going.”
When the Giants (5-10) got the ball first in the second half, they scored. Three times in a row, Taylor passed the ball to running half Saquon Barkley.
Taylor also hit Darius Slayton with a touchdown pass from 69 yards out late in the final quarter.
DeVito is a famous undrafted rookie who lives at home quickly became popular among fans by winning two of his first four games.
He was only told the two were trying to start a fight. They were behind 20–3 at the time. In the first half, Daboll told DeVito that the switch was going to be made.
It’s also a business. You need to do it. That’s cool. There’s no bad blood between them, either way. There was a chance that Taylor would play ball and help us win the game.
When he led his team to a come-from-behind win in the Packers from Green Bay on Monday night football three weeks ago, all the buzz about DeVito was at its highest.
They had won three games in a row, and he had passed for seven touchdowns and only one pick in all four starts.
It’s not chicken cutlets that they serve here in Philadelphia; it’s cheesesteak. The price of Tommy DeVito’s Rao’s sauce might have to go down now.
During the second half of the Giants’ 33-25 loss of the Eagles on Christmas Day, they took DeVito out of the game and put Tyrod Taylor in at quarterback.
Head coach Brian Daboll said, “I made a change to try to spark something.” He wouldn’t say whether DeVito and Taylor would start on Sunday against the Rams. That’s all it is. That is all there is to it.
The Giants were down 20–3 and had just taken over at the Eagles’ 14-yard line after Boston Scott lost the kickoff early in the third quarter. Taylor then came into the game.
The third-string quarterback who wasn’t picked in the draft but is now the starter said last week that he was excited to play in front of Lincoln Financial Field’s notoriously rowdy fans.
“It just keeps reminding us that it’s a business,” DeVito said. “No matter what, they’ll always try to locate someone to replace you.”
But in the end, it’s a business, and I see your job as important. It doesn’t make me feel one way and the other. “I wished Taylo would play ball out there.”
In the fourth quarter, Taylor threw a 69-yard bomb with Darius Slayton, who scored a touchdown. This cut the Giants’ lead to 30-25. He did throw for 133 yards, scored a touchdown, and picked off a pass, but he didn’t do much else.
DeVito has started the last six games, including Monday’s, after taking over for Daniel Jones and Taylor when they got hurt. He even kept his beginning job after Taylor got better.
It works for me. Every day, he said, “I just go outside and try to enjoy it.” As I’ve said before, you cannot predict when your last snap will be, so I try to enjoy every one while I’m out there. I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had and just aim to keep going.
