The Lionesses, fifth, and the Lions, sixth, at the start of the series seven in Algarve

MADRID, 11 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The women’s and men’s sevens teams have finished their participation in Algarve, the first tournament of the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series 2023, with a fifth and sixth place in the last meeting before the European Games in Krakow, qualifiers for the Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

Las Leonas, four wins, one draw and one loss, met their goal thanks to a fifth place that allows them to be seeded in the pre-Olympic group stage. The Lions, for their part, have finished in sixth position after beating Italy this Sunday, 38-21, in their first game and losing against Portugal, 12-17.

The women’s team demonstrated in Algarve that it was capable of competing against Ireland, third after losing in the semifinals against France, and Great Britain, where the difference was marked by the success of the British team’s shots at sticks.

The Lions, with some rotations and with their mind set on the European Games, ended with a bittersweet taste after the defeat against Portugal (5 wins and 2 losses), at the beginning of their defense of the title of the Rugby Europe Sevens Championship Series.
