The full Week 11 men’s AP College Basket Poll 2024 rankings have been released.
It’s now Week 11 of the college basketball season for men, and the AP Top 25 results came out on Monday. A lot has changed; there are no longer any unbeaten teams, and several top teams have lost.
The lists for this week’s NCAA Division I male basketball teams are out. UConn jumped to the top because it moved up three spots from last week, putting the Purdue Boilermakers in second place.
The regular season is still going on, so these ranks will change, but here are the Week 11 AP Top 25 standings. If a team is chosen as the best, it gets 25 points. For every spot in the top 25, it gets one less point.
The Purdue Boilermakers are down one spot on the AP Top 25, but that doesn’t mean that everyone is giving up on them or that they are going to fail soon. Points are given based on how each AP poll member ranks the candidates.
For the AP Top 25, 63 people voted. Of those, 39 picked UConn as the best team, and 20 picked Purdue.
The Huskies got 1,542 points, while the Boilermakers got 1,506. This isn’t a big difference in the total points, even though the Huskies got 19 more first-place votes.
A loss on the road to the Nebraska Cornhuskers without a ranking of 88 points seems to have been on the minds of some voters.
They only have two games left until next week’s poll. Both of those games are on the road against Indiana and Iowa.
It will depend on how well Zach Edey and the remaining members of Purdue’s team play in these games or how well the UConn Huskies play. Don’t be shocked if the Boilermakers take back the top spot after a long time.
After winning the NCAA title last year, Connecticut has now claimed the top spot in the men’s college basketball poll for the first time in almost 15 years. Gonzaga, on the other hand, has dropped out of the AP Top 25 for the first time in eight years.
The Huskies went to the top of Monday’s poll, which came out after a wild and eventful week in sports, which saw five new teams enter the poll.
This is the first time UConn has been No. 1 among the AP Top 25 since the second half of the 2008–09 season when the Huskies made it to the Final Four. They were there for four weeks.
“Some people don’t want the target,” coach Dan Hurley said last week when asked about the chance to get to No. 1. “I believe UConn will reach our goal.”
After Purdue’s loss at Nebraska, which dropped them to No. 2, UConn got 39 of the 63 first-place votes, moving them up three spots to take over the top spot.
Twenty of the first-place votes went to Purdue. Kansas, the only team in the poll that didn’t change from last week, got three first-place ballots despite losing at UCF.
North Carolina moved up three spots to No. 4 after defeating rival University of North Carolina for the third time in a row on the road in the Atlantic Coast Conference and also beating Syracuse badly at home. UNC even got a vote for first place.
Gonzaga dropped from No. 23 to No. 24 after losing at Santa Clara. This is the first time since the last two months of the 2015-16 season that Mark Few’s team has not been rated.
That stopped a run of 143 straight weeks in the poll, with 39 of those weeks being at No. 1. One notable example was Gonzaga’s perfect season in 2020–21, which finished with a loss to Baylor in the NCAA title game.
The AP Top 25 teams played a lot of games last week that were traps. Eight of the top ten teams fell at least once. No. 5 Houston’s first losses of the year came in two games by a total of five points.
Fifteen ranked teams lost last week, though, which kept some teams to falling as much because everyone else did.
In the end, the Cougars only fell three spots, to No. 5. Purdue, No. 6 Tennessee, and No. 8 Kentucky all fell only one or two spots after losing to teams that weren’t rated.
