The dream night of Mery, her husband Mark’s “babysitter”: this is the love story of Nebulossa, the Eurovision “boomers”

The age difference between María ‘Mery’ Bas (55 years old) y Mark Dasousa (47) It allowed them to get to know each other in a peculiar way, long before they became a couple. “I was the one who took care of him,” she confesses. “I made out with my babysitter,” he jokes when remembering that Mery was his babysitter when he was little. Some time later they fell in love and began a relationship that has lasted 20 years.

The members of Nebulossa, the duo that tonight (9:00 p.m., on La 1) represent Spain in Eurovision 2024, live in Ondara (Alicante) with their “three daughters”: María, Neo and Ona: “Ona is our dog, but for me she is like another daughter,” explains Mery. From there they have developed a musical career that has taken them to Malmö (Sweden), although they have not always been on stage.

Mery has run a beauty center – “aesthetics and spa” – which is now in the hands of her daughter. “It’s not a hair salon,” she clarifies to specify the information that appeared at the time. “It is an inheritance from my mother and my daughter [23 años] will inherit the position.” Mark, for his part, is a man who has always been in the music industry, working with artists from the Valencian community, and has a recording studio that has been active for 21 years (Atomic Studio). He works for other singers and also edits Nebulossa’s music, because they did not want to sign with any major record company and prefer to continue producing themselves.

A few years ago, Mark and Mery also became a couple on stage. First in a group in which he sang and she was a backup singer. Afterwards, they began to make music hand in hand, with eighties-style sounds. synth-pop. They participated in some festivals that made them known among the public. indie, but always in a very discreet way. The name Nebulossa came about when the family took a family trip and visited an observatory. While they explained the constellations, Mery was clear: “Nebulossa will be our name.”

“Age has closed doors on us other times”

The life of this couple took a radical turn when Mery decided to appear at the Benidorm Fest, almost at the last minute – “last year I missed it” – and without Mark knowing very well what he was signing. “Something smelled to me, but I didn’t give it any importance because I thought they weren’t going to catch us.” They believed that RTVE was not going to select them, possibly because their age had been a problem for them before. “Are boomers“says Mark. “Age has closed doors on us before,” explains Mery. “It was always something that made us insecure.” In fact, the day that TVE announced her presence as one of the candidates for the Benidorm Fest, Nebulossa was with a humility unknown in the world of artists. Mery and Mark were afraid of not fitting in with other younger colleagues and assumed that they would not even advance to the final of that contest that serves to choose the Spanish representative for Eurovision.

Nebulossa won with Zorra, a topic that raised a lot of controversy and received strong criticism from all sectors – also support, such as that of Pedro Sánchez – but they have always stayed away from the comments. “We’re not 20 years old, we’re struggling,” they said after winning. They are also not afraid of ending up in a bad position, or even being last. “No, why? Obviously, we prefer not to, but we are not going to make a drama out of it. It catches us at an age where things are seen differently,” says Mery. “If we are last, then we will do the 0 Points Tour“Adds Mark.
