The countdown begins for Johan Cruyff street

When they are fulfilled exactly five years since the death of Johan Cruyff, the Barcelona City Council can now start considering giving you a street to the former player and former coach of Barcelona. In the rules of the municipal gazette that regulates the names of the streets of Barcelona, it is specified that You cannot give the name of any street to a character who has not been dead for five years. Today marks the fifth anniversary of the disappearance of Cruyff and immediately the association 'Amics de Johan' will raise this request to the consistory.

The idea of naming a street with the name of Cruyff appeared from the moment of his death, although for bureaucratic reasons in Barcelona the process must have been stagnant for five years. It is not the case of Vallfogona de Riucorb, where since 2016 Cruyff has had its street on the initiative of Mayor Francesc Llobet.

The idea of the promoters of this initiative, which has the support of the new Barça board presided over by Joan Laporta, who by the way attended the opening of the street in Vallfogona in 2016, is to take advantage of the urban plan that involves the remodeling of Camp Nou to be baptized with the name of Johan one of the new streets that will be close to Camp Nou and thus not change the name to another street. When the idea was suggested that Aristides Maillol Street, which is the postal address of the club's offices and Camp Nou, should change its name to Cruyff, a certain controversy and protests were caused by the French artist's family.
