MADRID, 9 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Manchester City confirmed their presence in the quarterfinals of the Champions League with a 0-0 win this Wednesday at home against Sporting de Portugal, a rival who had an impossible mission to overcome one of the favorites from 0-5 in the first leg to the title.
Those of Pep Guardiola brought homework more than done from the first stake in Portuguese lands three weeks ago and in Manchester they dominated and dosed in equal parts. Sporting had enough to contain the local arrivals of the first half and, already in the final stretch, they ended up looking for the English goal of Scott Carson.
The veteran goalkeeper was one of the less usual players with minutes in the second half, plus the City academy also in action. Raheem Sterling was the best of the first half and who had the clearest chance for the score to break that 0-0.
After the break, City looked more for the rival goal, but between the proud wear and tear of Sporting and the inevitable feeling of pachanga, the leader of the Premier lacked aim. Gabriel Jesus also forgave and Carson stopped Paulinho the clearest of a Sporting that was known to be out due to the English punch in the first leg.
