Betis looks to the present and also intends look to the future in the midst of a campaign full of challenges and incentives. While the team is going strong in the League, Europa League and Copa del Rey, caution also reigns when planning any movement that may be carried out by the club. In this way, the sports director of Betis, Antonio Cordón, reviews in an interview with Diario AS some keys of the current green and white moment.
A dizzying calendar arrives for Betis. Is the squad ready to continue giving breaks and keep up the same level?
-There is a sufficient squad to cover losses, the importance is to maintain our game philosophy, independently of the players who are on the field. The important thing at Betis is the team structure.
Can the fact of keeping the path on all three fronts be definitive?
-The whole club and all the Betis are delighted that it is played every three or four days. We are the only team in Spain that can boast of this. It is complicated, that is why there are not so many teams that achieve it. We will see if we are able or not to continue for as long as possible. It’s football, anything can happen.
So maybe that calendar even becomes an incentive and not a burden…
-What a player wants most is to play every three days instead of training. Although it supposes a fatigue, there are physical trainers for it. The dream of footballers is to play every so often. Competing is nice, going to stadiums like Zenit is an experience. Our illusion is to try to maintain it. We want this to happen for many seasons, we don’t want it to be reflected in a few weeks. I think that we are handling this structural growth of the club quite well.
It seems that Joaquín continues to have a lot of weight in this Betis.
-I don’t have to say anything about Joaquín, all Beticismo knows what Joaquín means to Betis and Betis to Joaquín. We know how important it is within the group, not only in terms of technical quality but also of human quality. He is an example for our school and our city. Everything that can be said about him is good.
Is William Carvalho already the player that was intended to be found?
-I think that Betis’s obligation is to get all the players on their squad to give their best performance. I think we are now getting William Carvalho to reflect the best version of him, it is what we have to achieve with all the players.
Is there a look at the Champions?
-The look since I’m in the club I don’t put it so short term. Not every week, not every month. I have a more general vision, I wanted the club to grow in all its areas, I think we are achieving it and that is the objective. If it is reflected in what is happening in the first team, perhaps we are on the right track and we should continue to do so for more years.
Would a ticket to the next Champions League change everything?
-The Champions would not change our work context. We are always looking to have quality and excellence. That context would help us improve even more if we managed to qualify. That is still a long way off. My goal is for the club to continue to grow based on work in all areas. We must become stronger in everything. That will mean that we are not waiting for a result on a Sunday.
