The Atlético-Athletic controversy: a penalty not called in each area

The second semifinal of the Spanish Super Cup is already controversial. In the first 10 minutes, each team has claimed a penalty and, as Iturralde explains in Carrusel, with arguments to do so. First was Lemar and then Sancet who complained to Cuadra Fernández. Neither the referee nor the VAR understood that they were actions to punish.

In minute 6, after a corner kick in favor, Lemar received from the front and tried a break on Berenguer, who put his foot in and knocked him down. The Frenchman from Atleti asked for a penalty, although the referee explained to the rojiblancos that the Athletic player had already moved his foot when the athletic player started the dribble. “It’s a penalty. The key is who initiates the contact. If you have your foot on the ground you can’t start it, but Berenguer doesn’t have it, he can’t excuse himself with that,” explains Iturralde, referee for AS and Cadena Ser.

Shortly after, in the other field, it was Athletic who claimed. Sancet went to shoot and Kondogbia stepped on his heel, right on the edge of the area. Iturralde has no doubts: “It’s a Kondogbia penalty. He steps on Sancet and is inside the area.” They also did not notify Cuadra Fernández from the VAR.
