The Association of Asturian Excyclists will distinguish Joop Zoetemelk with its gold badge

The Association of Asturian Excyclists will award its gold medal on November 17, on the occasion of its thirtieth annual gala dinner, to the Dutchman Joop Zoetemelk, one of the great cycling figures of the 70s and 80s.

Zoetemelk, who raced as a professional for 18 years, was winner of the Tour de France in 1980 and the Vuelta a España in 1979, and his record also includes six second places in the ‘Grande Boucle’ and world road gold in 1985 and the Olympic team time trial in 1968.

According to the Association, at its gala the former Asturian runner Diego García Gutiérrez, who was part of the first two professional squads of the legendary CLAS in 1988 and 1989, will also be recognized with this gold badge, and plaques of recognition to the José brothers Antonio and Heriberto Álvarez Lafuente, Juan Enrique Bedia Amor and José María Palacios Marcos.
