Amiab Albacete will begin the defense of its title in the Copa del Rey wheelchair basketball, which will be held in the province of Malaga between May 21 and 22, against the host Amivel, according to the draw held this Monday
In addition, Bidaideak Bilbao and Ilunion, the most successful team in the competition with ten trophies, will be in charge of opening the Cup and the winner of their duel will face Mideba Extremadura-Iberconsa Amfiv. Whoever wins the UCAM Murcia-ACE Gran Canaria will play against the winner of Amiab Albacete-Amivel.
The Carranque sports center in Malaga will host two quarter-final matches, the semifinals and the final, while the Vélez-Málaga sports pavilion, where Amivel usually plays, will host the other two matches of the first round.
“We are lucky to have the best wheelchair basketball competition in the world from above and from below. Everything is going to compete, everything is going to fight, and we are going to see great games in this Cup”, said Juanma Búrdalo, national coordinator wheelchair basketball, after the draw.
For his part, Miguel Ángel García, general director of the Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Physical Disabilities (FEDDF), recalled that in the Copa del Rey “any result can be given”. “It has been shown many times that possible favorites fall at the first opportunity against other rivals a priori that did not count to go far in the competition,” he said.
