Chance wanted it to be that terrifyingly cinematic day. But don’t be scared. This is a story that is not scary: next Friday, December 13, will mark a milestone in the life of the Infanta Sofia who, at 17 years old, will take on an official solo act for the first time as a representative of the Royal Family. The youngest daughter of the Kings will preside over the awards ceremony for the Objective Heritage photography contest. Infanta Sofía Photography Contest, organized by National Heritage. The event will take place at 5:00 p.m. in the Royal Collections Gallery, two days after Sofia begins her Christmas holidays from UWC Atlantic College in Wales, where she is studying her second and final year of the International Baccalaureate.
The photography contest aims to highlight the richness of the historical, cultural and natural heritage of Spain, as well as the Royal Sites. According to the jury, the participating images stood out for their high quality and thematic diversity. The winners will receive as a prize a double name card with free access to the Royal Sites for one year, a double ticket to a concert at the Royal Palace of Madrid, where the famous Stradivarius violins will be used, and a set of books on heritage. In addition, the shortlisted photographs will be part of a temporary exhibition in the Royal Collections Gallery and will appear on a dedicated microsite on the institution’s website.
First step in your institutional role
This act marks the official beginning of the institutional participation of Infanta Sofía alone, a sign of the growing role she will play in the future in support of the Crown and her sister, Princess Leonor. Until now, the princess had participated in official engagements exclusively in the company of the Kings or her older sister. Her prominence reflects Felipe VI’s trust in Sofia as an important asset for the Royal House, consolidating her role in public life and her preparation for future responsibilities. After the Christmas holidays, the infanta will return to boarding school in the United Kingdom in January to face a decisive year: her coming of age in April, her final high school exams and preparations for the next chapter in her life. As happened with Princess Leonor, in the spring of 2025 the Royal Family is expected to reveal Sofia’s future plans. It will then be known if he follows in his sister’s footsteps, beginning military training, or if he opts for a university career, decisions that will offer clues about his personal interests and his role in the Royal Family. Infanta Sofía thus begins her path as a key figure for the future of the Spanish monarchy.
