Catherine Deneuve rodaba Love is a strange game, by Alain Cavalier, when it was photographed on Pampelonne beach, near Saint-Tropez. It was 1968, she was only 25 years old and her career was taking off. That image of the young French actress was the one that the Cannes Festival used this year to illustrate the 76th edition that was held last May. She did it to pay tribute to the great lady of French cinema who turns 80 this Sunday.
Daughter of actors (Maurice Dorléac Ver and Renée Simonot), Catherine Deneuve made her film debut at the age of 14 in The College Girls (1957). In 1965 he filmed another of the fundamental titles of his career, Repulsion, under the orders of Roman Polanski. Perhaps because of the role she played in this film, a repressed young woman who felt attraction and rejection towards men, that idea of a cold and distant woman began to be born. A fame that increased even more when she filmed with Luis Buñuel another of her most famous films: Beautiful by day, in which she played a sexually repressed married woman, but who was dedicated to prostitution. She with him she would work again in Tristanaplaying the lame niece that fascinated Fernando Rey.
Another of his most remembered films, The Mississippi Sirenhe filmed it under the orders of another of the greats of French cinema, François Truffaut, with whom he also filmed The last subway and with whom she had a romantic relationship for two years. From her filmography she herself highlights, among many others, dance in the dark (Palma de Oro), by Lars von Trier.
Deneuve was nominated for an Oscar only once, in 1992 for Indochina, for which he won one of his two Césars. The other was for The last subway. In total she has been nominated 12 times for French film awards. In 2002 she won the European Film Award for best actress for 8 women.
