Number one seed of Ukraine Elina Svitolina took home her first WTA singles title of the season by defeating the ninth seed, the French Alizé Cornet, 7-5 and 6-4 in the Chicago final this Saturday.
After two hours and two minutes of tennis in the Illinois heat, Svitolina emerged victorious and captured her 16th career WTA title. Svitolina has an outstanding 16-3 record in wins and losses in singles finals.
Svitolina and Cornet, ranked 68th, had a strong head-to-head going into the clash, with Svitolina holding a slim 4-3 lead, despite Cornet winning their last match, at Eastbourne 2019.
But it was Svitolina who was the winner this time, as she returned to the winner's circle for the first time since she won the clay court tournament in Strasbourg almost a year ago.
“It was a good week here,” Svitolina told reporters after her victory. “The conditions were difficult the last days, but in the end I am very happy to have been able to get a trophy. It's a good feeling. I came here to gain confidence, to play good games and in the end it happened like that. I can't wait to go back to New York. “
