Stéphanie Frappart will be the first woman to referee a Champions League match

UEFA confirmed the appointment of French Stéphanie Frappart to referee Juventus-Dinamo Kiev, a week after choosing her to whistle the Europa League match Granada-Omonia Nicosia (2-1).

Frapart, born in Herblay 36 years ago, became the first woman to referee a match in this continental competition when she directed the clash between English Leicester and Ukrainian Zorya, although on August 14, 2019 she already had the opportunity to referee the European Super Cup between Liverpool and Chelsea and also the confrontation of the previous Europa League between Djurgarden and Europa.

The Frenchwoman was not, however, the first referee assigned to a UEFA men's match. That honor went to Nicole Petignat when she coached UEFA Cup qualifying matches between 2004 and 2009, according to UEFA's own data, although she will now make Champions League history.
