Spain will organize the men’s European handball 2028 together with Portugal and Switzerland

Spain will host the 2028 European Men’s Handball Championship together with Portugal and Switzerland, an appointment that will be held between January 13 and 30 of that year, the Royal Spanish Handball Federation (RFEBM) has confirmed this Saturday.

The Congress of the European Handball Federation (EHF) that is being held in Vienna, has granted the organization of the tournament to the RFEBM, together with the Portuguese Handball Federation (FPA) and the Swiss Handball Federation (SHV), which presented as sole candidacy.

The president of the RFEBM, Francisco V. Blázquez, celebrated the “historic moment”. “It is a pride to be able to organize a great event 32 years after the last one that was held in Spain. It is a reason for joy, even more so now that we are on the eve of another great event such as the Women’s World Championship. It is a project exciting in which the Royal Spanish Handball Federation will work to continue this line of growth, “he said.

For his part, the president of the EHF, Michael Wiederer, assured that Spain, Portugal and Switzerland are “three strong partners” for this 2028 European Championship.

For his part, the president of the Portuguese Handball Federation, Miguel Laranjeiro, was “proud” of the “trust” that the EHF has placed in them. “The enthusiasm for this candidacy is palpable and shows that we know how to host and organize this great event. We want to make history in 2028,” he said.

Finally, the president of the Swiss Handball Federation, Ulrich Rubeli, affirmed that with this appointment “new opportunities” are opened. “Swiss handball will become even more important on the sporting agenda, offering players, fans and sponsors attractive long-term prospects,” he said.

The European 2028 will have as its motto ‘New heights for handball under one anthem’. Two groups of the Preliminary Round will be played in each of the three host countries: in Spain, the venues will be Madrid -WiZink Center- and Valencia -Casal España-. Subsequently, the Main Round will be held in Madrid -WiZink Center- and Lisbon -Altice Arena-. Finally, the Final Weekend will be in Spain, with several options available in both Madrid and Barcelona: the new Santiago Bernabéu, the Wanda Metropolitano or the Palau Sant Jordi.
