Spain subdues a feisty Slovenia in the Italian triangle

The Spanish women’s basketball team beat Slovenia (56-60) this Saturday in a friendly within the triangle that is being played in Cividale del Friuli, where the host Italy will be measured on Sunday, another good exercise by Miguel Méndez.

Spain added its third victory in a row this summer and the fifth with the Galician coach always ahead although with a rival who never left the match. María Araújo (11 points, 14 rebounds and a PIR of 19), Raquel Carrera (15 PIR) and María Conde (17 points and a PIR of 17) were the most outstanding.

Those of Méndez began stealing balls and imposing their rhythm, with Conde contributing the points. The mastery of rhythm was not accompanied by success in Spain, while Friskovec kept the Slovenians close. The first Spanish threat of escape was after five minutes of the second quarter (14-24).

However, the four-time European champion’s attacking blockage and the loss of the rebound gave the Slovenians the option of pressing the light. Carrera and Araújo closed the first half with good actions that took off again for Méndez (23-34).


The Galician pivot came back plugged in with the resumption and with María Conde they opened up the income more. Another attempt to leave the Slovenians behind without success, since Friskovec returned to get important points. However, Spain confirmed its blow in the third quarter with a run of 4-12 (38-52).

Slovenia’s zone defense thickened the Spanish attack in the final act, where Méndez’s men lost control with a 18-8 scoreline, with points from Lisec and Oblak. Conde, Leo Rodríguez and Irati unblocked the situation so as not to jeopardize the victory and to think tirelessly about Italy, a more important rival.
