MADRID 9 Dic. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Spanish men’s rugby sevens team finished fourth this Sunday in the HSBC SVNS Series event in Cape Town (South Africa) by losing (10-47) to Fiji, extending the best start to the season in its history.
Spain, which reached its first final last week in Dubai, was on the verge of stepping on the last step again and was unable to fight for third and fourth place against the leaders of the competition. The Spanish reached the semifinals after beating Kenya and Australia in the group stage.
The hosts, South Africa, defeated Los Leones 12-19 in search of a ticket to a new final. In the match to close the podium, Jeremy Trevithick’s two tries helped the Spaniards dream of victory, but Fiji’s physicality and unpredictable play decisively decided the match.
With this result, Spain closes 2024 with a total of 32 points, thus leaving its best historical record after two tournaments, remaining just four points away from the 36 they achieved throughout last season.
Paco Hernández’s men close the Cape Town tournament among the three best teams in the HSBC SVNS Series with those 32 points, behind Fiji (36 points) and ahead of France (30) and South Africa (30), who close the podium.
