The Spanish 3×3 basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup that is being played in Antwerp (Belgium), thanks to its full victories in the first phase, first in its group by beating Canada on Thursday (18-16) and Israel (22-16).
Sandra Ygueravide, Marta Canella, Vega Gimeno and Aitana Cuevas are still determined to make history after winning gold at the European 3×3 in Paris less than a year ago.
Spain confirmed its full victories in the group stage of the World Cup to avoid crossing the round of 16, a direct ticket to the quarterfinals and a rival yet to be confirmed. The most difficult match on paper and with the first place at stake awaited against the Canadians, on the track of the Groenplaats in Antwerp.
The Americans came out better and with the Plouffe twins doing damage under the basket. The Spanish held on to the match, with the foul problem in Canada, in a comeback that still had a heart-stopping ending, when Marta Canella forced extra time.
