The Spanish badminton team is one step away from certifying its qualification for the European Team Championship after beating Portugal 5-0 this Friday on the second day of the qualifying phase, which is being held in Ibiza.
The team led by sports director Arturo Ruiz and CAR coaches Bea Corrales and Manu Vázquez has added its second victory, after the one achieved on Thursday against Estonia, and must confirm the classification this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. against Belgium, which has fallen 1 -4 against Estonia.
The mixed doubles of Rubén García and Lucía Rodríguez achieved the first point against the Portuguese by 21-14 and 21-7 in just 23 minutes. The tandem formed by the Andalusian and the Galician is in great form, having just won gold at the Welsh International and silver at the Scottish Open.
The men’s singles match played by Álvaro Vázquez was more even against Diogo Gloria 21-11, 17-21 and 21-13. The point that ensured the victory of the national team was achieved by Clara Azurmendi against Mariana Paiva, 21-14, 19-21, 21-13.
With the tie won, the men’s doubles by Carlos Piris and Rubén García and the women’s doubles, by Paula López and Lucía Rodríguez, rounded off the overwhelming 5-0 for a Spain that is strongly pursuing the continental ticket.
