Six international footballers from Red bull from Salzburg, rival of Atlético de Madrid in the Champions League, have tested positive for covid-19 in a mandatory test carried out for the League of Nations matches held this weekend and have been ruled out to play with their national teams.
“The players, currently without symptoms, have been put directly into self-isolation,” explains the Austrian club in a statement issued today, in which it explains that the rest of the group is in “team quarantine”, which means that they can only move between their homes to training sessions and the stadiums where the matches are played.
“All international calls for Red Bull Salzburg players are rejected for the moment,” the club announced.
The positives came from a test carried out after the Austrian league game that Salzburg played last Friday against Rapid Vienna. Before that encounter, all the players had tested negative for coronavirus.
The club has indicated that “to investigate the differences in the results of the tests in such a short period of time” and to clarify the level of contagion of the players, all footballers are going to undergo a series of PCR tests.
The club has not disclosed the names of the affected players. Salzburg's international footballers include Noah Okafor, who plays for the Swiss national team, which faces Spain in the Nations League on Saturday.
