Sharon Kantor and Nicolo Renna, new iQFOiL world champions in Lanzarote

The Spaniards Pilar Lamadrid and Nacho Baltasar were fifth and tenth

MADRID, 3 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The iQFOiL World Championship, the Olympic windsurfing class that for nine days has brought together more than 200 athletes from 43 countries in Lanzarote, ended this Saturday with the titles of the Israeli Sharon Kantor and the Italian Nicolo Renna, while the Spanish Pilar Lamadrid and Nacho Baltasar were fifth and tenth.

Quarterfinals, semifinals and Grand Final took up the last day in Canarian waters. Lamadrid was on the verge of the Grand Final, after a great start leading the race, but a bad decision at the moment of gybing in the first stern relegated her while Sharon Kantor and Katy Spychakov marked themselves closely.

The Israelis were betting on being in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games representing their country, both achieving a place in the final against the British Emma Wilson, leader from the first day. Bronze in the last World Cup in The Hague and gold in Tokyo 2020, the British was surprised by Kantor.

Meanwhile, in the men's event, Renna took a risk and won, ahead of the Polish Pawel Tarnowski and the Dutch Luuc van Opzeeland. The Spanish Nacho Baltasar said goodbye after the first test on Saturday in a creditable tenth place.

“Happy because the objectives are set in the Olympics and you have opportunities to train and learn. It has been a hard week, sailing very well like all my teammates, the level is incredible,” said Baltasar.

Renna and Tarnowski faced each other in a quick Grand Final – it was resolved in seven minutes – with the defending champion Van Opzeeland (NED). On the last beat, the Italian decided to go to the right, unlike his rivals, a decision that proclaimed him iQFOiL world champion in Lanzarote.
