Schroder leads Germany past Poland for bronze at the Eurobasket

MADRID, 18 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The German basketball team has won bronze at Eurobasket 2022, winning its third European medal in its history as host, thanks to a more than remarkable performance by Dennis Schroeder (26 points), who killed the game with two triples in the last quarter to unleash the madness of the Berlin Arena and give the third place to his team, who won 82-69.

Dennis Schroeder, who finished the Eurobasket averaging more than 20 points per game, was escorted by a great Johannes Voigtmann, who scored 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, to defeat a feisty Poland, who despite being behind throughout the match he did not give up and equalized the score seven minutes from the end. From there, a 23-10 run killed the match and gave Germany their medal.

In Poland, with Mateusz Ponitka and AJ Slaughter closely guarded defensively, Michal Sokolowski and Jakub Garbacz appeared to support their team, which was doing the rubber at all times to not let go. The Polish team closed a Eurobasket in a very dignified way in which they have been the great surprise eliminating the current champion and fighting until the end for what could have been the first medal in a European since 1967.

Despite the great favoritism of Germany, who played in front of their fans and with a theoretically much superior squad, it was very difficult for them to break up the match. In the second quarter, they had a 15-point advantage, but the irregularity was the tonic of their game, alternating periods of good play and success in the triple with others in which they were surpassed by Poland. That was how Gordon Herbert’s team got their first medal since 2005.
