Salary limits in Second: € 237M can be spent

LaLiga has updated the salary limits of Second Division teams after the transfer market closes. Clubs must continue to tighten their belts on the impact of COVID on budgets. The fans still cannot return to the stadiums and that means that one of the sources of income remains closed. In the readjustment, in Second it will only be possible to spend 237 million euros in total.

The teams that can continue to spend the most in salaries are those descended from First last year, they have the compensation fund from the TV rights item that makes them have more income. Espanyol (€ 44.7M), Leganés (26) and Mallorca (18.5). In addition, Almería remains among those that can allocate more money to salaries. Among those with the least are Malaga (€ 2.9M), Girona (4.1) and Mirandés (4.3).

What is the salary cap and how is it calculated?

The Sports Squad Cost Limit is the maximum amount that each Second Division club can spend on salaries for players, coach, assistant coach and physical trainer (registrable squad), as well as the subsidiary, the quarry and other sections ( non-registrable template).

The concept of registrable sports workforce includes fixed and variable salary remuneration (whether in cash or in kind such as a home, a vehicle, a trip …), remuneration for transfer of image rights, amortization of transfers, Social Security contributions, compensation for the termination of contracts, collective premiums, acquisition expenses when having to pay premiums to representatives …

Its calculation is made from the difference between income (television, commercial, ticketing …) of structural expenses and the repayment of the expected debt throughout the season. From there, it is each club that draws up its own salary limit, but must comply with the rules of LaLiga's Economic Control and which, subsequently, must be approved by the Validation Body. In case of having a salary limit that does not guarantee the stability of the club, this body would reduce it to an amount that if it did.
