Next year returns to its usual date in January and February. Liverpool lost during that time to Man, Salah and Keyta
New episode in the battle that confronts Jrgen Klopp with the organizers of the football competitions. This time the Liverpool coach lamented the change in the calendar of the African Cup of Nations (CAN), which will be played again in January and February in 2021.
The last edition of the CAN, last year in Egypt, is held in June and July, which is a novelty compared to the previous ones, which took place in January and February, in the middle of the European football season. However, this week, the African Football Confederation (CAF) confirmed that the Cameroon edition in 2021 will mark the return to the months of January and February.
Historically, the African Cup was played at the beginning of the year to avoid the highest temperatures on the continent. But those dates annoy European clubs, especially in France and England, where more African stars play.
Liverpool has in its ranks several figures of the African continent like the Egyptian Mohamed Salahthe senegals Sadio Man and the Guinean Naby Keita.
In recent weeks, Klopp was critical with the density of the calendar. In order to play the quarterfinal of the English League Cup and the semi-final of the Club World Cup, in matches scheduled on December 17 and 18, Liverpool had to present two different teams in each of those competitions.
“FIFA, UEFA and the federations of each country must meet and fix this,” estimates Klopp, noting that he understands, however, the arguments that have led to moving the CAN from 2021 in Cameroon to January and February.
