The footballer of the German team and one of the protagonists of the Euro 2022 in England Alexandra Popp took well her absence in the final due to injury – the Germans fell to the hosts – and considers that the “boom” has more value of women’s soccer.
“In the end, I think it would have been too happy an ending and maybe it wouldn’t have fitted in with my story or my story or my life in general. I was able to relativize everything relatively quickly,” the 31-year-old told Deutsche Presse-Agentur ‘.
With her six goals in the last Euro 2022, the forward played a fundamental role for the German team to reach the final, which they lost without her, injured just before the last game, against England (2-1).
But, according to Popp, the rise that women’s football received as a result of the Eurocup is also explained by the way the German team is. “You have the feeling that with our way of being, with our authenticity, we were somehow able to win people over and that was, of course, super nice,” she acknowledged.
“It means a lot that a lot of people come to see our games, that a lot of people tell us that they have found the joy of football again. That in the end could even be worth much more than if we had won the Eurocup,” he said.
