Pontevedra will host the World Triathlon Finals in 2023

Pontevedra will host in 2023 the Triathlon World Championship Finals, the event where the world champions of the Elite, Sub-23 and Paratriathlon categories will be crowned, as confirmed this Thursday by the International Triathlon Union (ITU).

The organism recognized that this event “is the jewel in the crown of the annual calendar” and the Galician city will take over from Abu Dhabi, chosen scene in 2022, and joins cities like London, Budapest, Beijing, Auckland (New Zealand) , Chicago (United States), Gold Coast (Australia), Lausanne (Switzerland) and Edmonton (Canada).

“We are delighted that Pontevedra, which has proven to be a fantastic host of multiple sports on the world triathlon calendar, is now hosting the best triathletes in the world for the World Championship Finals in 2023,” celebrated Spain’s Marisol Casada, president of the ITU.

For his part, the president of the Spanish Federation (FETRI), José Hidalgo, stressed that his body “has been a great host for many events.” “We are delighted to go one step further and host these Finals for the first time in our country,” he said.

Pontevedra already hosted the ITU Multisport World Championships in 2019, which hosted the modalities of Duathlon, Cross Triathlon, Aquathlon, Acuabike and Long Distance Triathlon, the latter with the victory of the Spanish Javier Gómez Noya.
