The city of Pontevedra will host a test of the 2022 Triathlon World Cup on the weekend of July 23, which will also serve as a valid test for the 2023 Triathlon World Championship Finals, which will also be held in the Galician city, has confirmed this Monday the International Federation of Athletics (World Triathlon).
“We are delighted that Pontevedra, which has proven to be a fantastic host of multiple sports on the world triathlon calendar, will now host some of the world’s best triathletes at this year’s Triathlon World Cup, a perfect setting to achieve that the teams are ready for the World Cup Finals in 2023”, explained the president of World Triathlon and member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Marisol Casado.
“Having such an event at the end of July means that it will be held in the best possible weather conditions in Pontevedra, in which athletes, but also friends, families and fans, will be able to enjoy the incredible places in the area, known for its temperatures smooth, amazing beaches and tasty food,” he added.
For his part, the mayor of Pontevedra, Miguel Anxo Fernández Lores, stated that the city is “ready to receive the best triathletes in the world”. “People from Pontevedra are well known for enjoying the triathlon and going out to the streets to cheer everyone on. I’m sure it will be a perfect event for everyone, and people from Pontevedra will once again be the perfect host for this year’s World Cup first and then for the long-awaited 2023 World Cup Finals. These two events demonstrate the true commitment of this city to the sport,” he stressed.
The Triathlon World Cup will have a new and renewed calendar in 2022, with more than 10 races around the world, with a few more to be added in the coming weeks. After the cancellation of the Miyazaki World Cup, the first stop will be in Haeundae (South Korea) at the end of April, to finish in Miyazaki (Japan) in November.
