MADRID, 23 One. (EUROPA PRESS) –
UD Las Palmas announced this Sunday the dismissal of its coach Pepe Mel, who had been on the bench of the Canarian team since March 2019, after the defeat on Saturday in Fuenlabrada.
“The Board of Directors today agreed to dismiss Pepe Mel as coach of the first team. After leading UD Las Palmas uninterruptedly since March 2019, the Madrid coach leaves the bench with the team just three points behind the positions of ‘play off’ and numerous debuts of players from the academy in professional football”, says the club.
The Gran Canaria team was in the fight for the promotion zone after 24 games, always tight until the last date, and was coming off good performances such as the victory in the derby in Tenerife. However, the board decided to change the bench in search of bringing the goal of being in that ‘Top 6’ closer.
With 128 games at the helm of the yellow bench (divided into 44 wins, 41 draws and 43 losses), Mel is the second coach in the history of UD Las Palmas with the most consecutive games of charge, only behind Pierre Sinibaldi, and fourth in total.
“UD Las Palmas thanks Pepe Mel for his commitment and dedication during his four seasons at the helm of the team, while wishing him the best of luck in his future projects,” added the official statement.
