Pep Lluís Martí, new coach of Sporting

Javier Fernández, president of Sporting de Gijón, confirmed at the end of the General Shareholders’ Meeting held today that Pep Lluís Martí will be presented this Wednesday as the new coach of the first team for the remainder of the season and another one in the event of achieving certain objectives that the leader did not disclose.

Martí has been chosen to replace David Gallego to try to straighten Sporting’s course, which with 14 games to go before the end of the league is in fifteenth position, seven points from the promotion playoff and 9 from the relegation places. .

The new coach of Sporting was already tested by the club from Gijón at the end of last year, but the team’s victory in Ibiza and the good progress in the Copa del Rey in which they eliminated Villarreal stopped the dismissal of David Gallego, who remained almost two more months leading the team.

Pep Lluís Martí has not trained for more than a year since his last team was dismissed from the ranks of Leganés after previously passing through Deportivo de La Coruña, Girona and Tenerife, the club in which he was the longest since he directed it for two and a half seasons.

Martí becomes the eighth coach that Sporting has had since current president Javier Fernández took office in 2016 after Abelardo Fernández, Rubi, Paco Herrera, Rubén Baraja, José Alberto López, Miroslav Dukic and David Gallego.

Pep Martí plans to arrive in Gijón tonight and tomorrow he could direct the training of the team that will receive Zaragoza at El Molinón on Sunday.
