Pelayo Novo, former player of Oviedo, Elche, Albacete, Lugo and Córdoba, dies

MADRID, 1 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Pelayo Novo, former player of Real Oviedo, Córdoba, Elche, Lugo, Cluj and Albacete Balompié, has died this Tuesday at the age of 32, as confirmed by the Oviedo team, whose foundation he was its ambassador.

“With a broken heart. We deeply regret the death of Pelayo Novo, captain of our Foundation. Family, friends: we are with you. Rest in peace Pelayo,” Real Oviedo published on their official Twitter account.

According to the newspaper ‘El Comercio’, Pelayo Novo died after being run over in the afternoon by a train on the Renfe line between the towns of Oviedo and Siero near La Corredoira.

The rest of the national clubs in which Pelayo Novo played also wanted to express their condolences after learning of the death of the former Oviedo midfielder, as did the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Novo already shocked the world of football five years ago when he was an Albacete player when he suffered a fall from the third floor of the hotel where the Albacete team was staying, which caused several fractures before playing a game against Huesca in El Alcoraz. After that accident he had to give up soccer, although he did not give up sports since he chose to try wheelchair tennis.

The former soccer player was part of the Board of Directors of the Asturian Tennis Federation as Member of New Disciplines and was very active in all competitions of this modality, appearing in twelfth place in the latest ranking published by the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation.
