Pedro Gil, most successful player of the Spanish team, will hang up his skates at the end of the season

The Barcelona athlete Pedro Gil Gómez, the most successful player of all time with the Spanish roller hockey team, announced this Tuesday that he will retire at the end of the season, after having turned 44 years old.

Sant Sadurní d’Anoia confirmed it together with his current team, HC Forte dei Marmi. The former Spanish international also played for Noia Freixenet, CP Tenerife, Infante de Sagres, FC Porto, Reus Deportiu, Hockey Valdagno and Sporting de Lisboa.

“With the national team, he can boast of being the most successful Spanish player of all time, having won absolutely everything. The one from Sant Sadurní won six World Cups (2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013), seven European Championships (2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012) and three Nations Cups (2003, 2005 and 2007)”, highlighted the Royal Spanish Skating Federation (RFEP) on its website.

“Gil captained the best historical generation of players to contribute to roller hockey continuing to be the most awarded in Spanish sport and will be remembered for playing in the ten years without losing that the absolute men’s team accumulated. From 2005 to 2014, Spain added 63 consecutive victories,” the RFEP recalled in its press release.

His success with the Spanish national team was transferred to club competitions. “Gil has won nine Portuguese Leagues, four Italian Leagues, two Portuguese Cups, one Copa del Rey, one Italian Cup, four Portuguese Super Cups, four Italian Super Cups, one Club World Cup, three WSE Champions Leagues, two WSE Cup and one Continental Cup,” the RFEP listed in its statement.

In addition, the Higher Sports Council (CSD) awarded Gil in 2011 one of the Gold Medals of the Royal Order of Sports Merit, the highest distinction awarded to sports in Spain.
