Óscar Husillos revalidates the title in Nerja and Asier Martínez flies over the fences

The Quijera brothers get a double in javelin throw

MADRID, 26 Jun. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The athlete from Palencia Óscar Husillos has revalidated this morning the title of Spanish champion of 400 meters in the absolute outdoors that is being disputed in Nerja (Málaga), while Xènia Benach and Asier Martínez flew over the fences, but with excessive wind in favor, and the Quijera brothers get a double in the javelin throw.

Husillos, 28, won the 400m with great brilliance. An unappealable victory with a great time of 45.45 seconds, the best Spanish mark of the year and minimum for the European Championship in Munich. Thus, the athlete managed to repeat the feat achieved last year in Getafe and now has six national wounds, five in 400 meters and one in 200.

In the women’s event, Eva Santidrián, from Burgos, 22 years old and in the U-23 category, won the national title of the 400 meters in an immaculate championship. The athlete arrived in Nerja with a time of 53 seconds and in the final she beat her personal best and the Spanish best of the year with 52.39, thus achieving her first absolute national title outdoors.

The third morning session at the Enrique López Cuenca stadium also left the titles on fences marked by the wind. The Navarrese Asier Martínez made good all the forecasts and took the gold medal, winning with 13.15, clearly beating the Valencian Enrique Llopis, who finished in 13.34. However, the wind invalidated the two excellent records, which in Martínez’s case would have been a new national record for the distance.

In the 100 meters hurdles, the Catalan Xènia Benach prevailed in a rough final to get her first national title. Elba Parmo, from La Rioja, one of the favorites for the title, was disqualified for a false start, while Carmen Sánchez Guerra, from Madrid, another of the candidates, tripped at the ninth fence when she was in second position and fell to the ground.

The Navarran Quijera brothers once again starred in the javelin throw final by occupying the first two positions of the test, as happened in 2018. Thus, the prognosis for the title was in favor of the youngest, Manu Quijera, the Spanish leader of the year, who took the lead from the first pitch to win his second title after the one achieved in 2019.

Nicolás could not beat Manu’s mark, who exceeded 78.61 meters and stayed on the fifth attempt at the gates of 80. Despite this, the older brother won the silver medal by achieving 76.92 meters, his best mark of the year after a long period in which he was not fully fit. The bronze went to Rodrigo Iglesias from La Rioja, who snatched the medal from Erik Huijing.

In the men’s high jump final, Carlos Rojas won gold and his fourth title, after those achieved in 2017, 2019 and 2020. A contest that missed the great absence of Xerc Tresens, the best Spanish record holder of the year. Thus, the man from Jaen cleanly passed 2.21, while the silver went to Alexis Sastre, with 2.15 and three failures over 2.18, ahead of Sául Villabla, who exceeded 2.08.

Absences were also present in the women’s long jump final. Without Fátima Diame, the gold medal went to Gipuzkoa Irati Mitxelena, achieving her first absolute national title with a first jump of 6.34 (+0.2) enough to win.

In the afternoon, the 102nd Spanish championship will close with the rest of the finals, including 4×100, 200, 800 and 1,500 metres, high jump and triple jump, among others.
