As published The Team on its website this Saturday, one of the four cities that was going to host the group stage of the Davis Cup Finals this year (September 14-18) has resignedalthough the French newspaper has not been able to confirm which venue it is.
In principle, Bologna (Italy), Glasgow (Scotland), Hamburg (Germany) and Malaga were the locations chosen to hold the first part of the competition. Probably for this reason the draw that should have been held on March 31 was postponed to April 26. As AS learned from sources from the Andalusian Government, Malaga is not the city that has withdrawn and will host the group from Spain.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) and Kosmos, the company that organizes the event, have invited other nations to occupy the vacant place. France, which qualified by beating Ecuador in the qualifying rounds last March, had applied but was not chosen at the time and filed an appeal with the Sports Arbitration Court, considering that it had been “arbitrarily annulled” from the process. The FFT has not made an official decision on what it will do next. Serbia could be one of the contenders.
