At last it became official as it had been speculating in recent days. At 33 years old, Jan Vertonghen, who recently ended his tenure at Tottenham after eight years, has decided to commit to the Benfica for the next three years (2023). The veteran Belgian defender passed the relevant medical examination to later sign his signature with the legendary Portuguese club that will seek compensation next season after seeing how Porto lifted the championship title in the Liga NOS.
He arrives to add experience behind Benfica since the international with Belgium accumulates 98 participations between Champions League and Europa League. In addition, with the ‘spur’ team they reached a final of the Champions League (2018-2019) although in the very final they lost 0-2 against the ‘reds’. However, his resume does not generate any doubt. He played 315 games with Tottenham in the eight seasons he played in the Premier League.
He will face his third different league after starting his football career at Ajax in the Netherlands, before signing for Tottenham in 2012.
