More than 150 candidates compete for the 2021 National Sports Awards

The jury begins the work of assessing and selecting the winners

The Higher Sports Council (CSD) announced this Thursday that there are more than 150 candidacies for the 2021 National Sports Awards, a historic figure in search of the awards that since 1982 recognize the people and entities that stood out in the field of sport and that contributed to the promotion of physical-sports activity during 2021.

Once the nomination period has ended, the evaluation and selection work of the jury for these Awards begins, made up of more than twenty personalities from
recognized prestige within the world of sport. The awards ceremony will take place in an act in April.

For the first time in the history of these awards, the jury will have an adequate representation of people with disabilities, beyond the representatives of the Spanish Paralympic Committee and the proportion of women far exceeds that of men. In addition, the Spanish Olympic Committee (COE), the Fundación Deporte Joven and the ADO program are represented on this jury, as well as high-level athletes, sports federations,
professional competitions, Autonomous Communities, sports press and the sports industry.

THIRTEEN CATEGORIES

As in recent editions, the National Sports Awards are grouped into thirteen categories, including awards, trophies and cups, the King Felipe and Queen Letizia awards, for the best Spanish athletes of the year in the male and female categories; King Juan Carlos, to the revelation sportsman; the Reina Sofía, to fair play and the eradication of violence in sport; Princess Leonor, to the best male or female athlete under 18 years of age.

Also the Infanta Sofía, to the person, entity or institution that has stood out especially in sport for people with disabilities, inclusive or Paralympic sport or in its promotion; the Ibero-American Community Trophy, for the best Ibero-American athlete, entity, club or institution; the Barón de Güell Cup, for the best team or selection of the year; the Stadium Cup, to the person or entity that has excelled in promoting sport, especially grassroots sport; the Higher Sports Council Award, to the local Spanish entity that has most stood out in promoting sport and physical activity.

Likewise, the Joaquín Blume Trophy, to the University, School or educational Center of any level that has distinguished itself especially during the year for its promotion and encouragement of sport; the National Award for Arts and Sciences Applied to Sports, to the professional or entity that has excelled in the dissemination of physical-sports activity; and the Francisco Fernández Ochoa National Award, for a career dedicated, in a notorious way, to the practice, organization, direction, promotion and development of sport.

FORTY YEARS OF NATIONAL AWARDS

Since its establishment in 1982, the National Sports Awards have recognized athletes such as Blanca Fernández Ochoa, Arantxa Sánchez Vicario, Conchita Martínez, Gemma Mengual, Edurne Pasaban, Ruth Beitia or Sandra Sánchez, among the female names. And to Carlos Sainz, Miguel Indurain, Pau Gasol, Rafa Nadal, Xavi Hernández, Marc Márquez or Saúl Craviotto, among the men.

Ricky Rubio, Clàudia Galicia, Adi Iglesias, RTVE or the Rafa Nadal Academy were some of the winners in the 2019 edition, which was delivered last July at the Royal Palace of El Pardo together with an extraordinary edition corresponding to 2020, dedicated to athletes who contributed to the fight against COVID-19.

The triathlete and doctor Susana Rodríguez; the canoeist and policeman Saúl Craviotto, the rescue and first aid athlete and nurse Isabel Costa; the canoeist and soldier Carlos Arévalo; and the trail runner and civil guard Luis Alberto Hernando were the ones who collected the awards from the King and Queen, Felipe VI and Letizia Ortiz.
