When it seemed that leukemia had been left behind, Sinisa Mihajlovic has released the worst news: “Leukemia is back”. The Bologna coach, who left the hospital in November 2019 after completing the third phase of his treatment, unexpectedly appeared at a press conference to announce that the disease was making an appearance again: “As you know, I undergoing very extensive testing cyclically after suffering from high-risk myeloid leukemia two and a half years ago, my recovery in recent years has been excellent, but these diseases are insidious and the latest tests have set off the alarms and there may be a risk that the disease will reappear. To prevent this from happening, I have been advised to embark on a treatment that will nip this negative hypothesis in the bud.”
A very bad news that has caught the Italian team by surprise. However, and despite the fact that Mihajlovic will have to be admitted to the Sant’Orsola hospital, the same one where he was in 2019, the Croatian has been strong and positive. “You can see that this disease is very brave to face someone like me again. If the first lesson was not enough, I will give you another. This is the path of life, made of descents and curves, there are also potholes where you can fall, but you must always find the strength to get back up. I know I’m in good hands.”has expressed the coach of Bologna.
Likewise, Mihajlovic has recognized that “Unlike two and a half years ago, I am more serene. I know what I have to do and the situation is different. I hope that time will be short. I will do my best to make it faster, but I will have to skip some matches. I already have everything I need to follow the training sessions and the matches prepared in the room that will host me.” Once he was diagnosed with leukemia in mid-July 2019, Mihajlovic began treatment. Already in August, after 41 days in hospital, the Croatian coach was able to leave the clinic to witness his team’s debut in the 2019/2020 league championship, in Verona against Hellas.
Bologna, located in the middle of the table in Serie A – they are 12th with 33 points – will not be able to count on their coach, renewed until June 2023 after overcoming the illness for the first time, but Mihajlovic fully trusts his players to face the final stretch of the season: “I’m sure the boys won’t let me down. I’ll fight alongside them and I’m sure they’ll fight for me.”. I also ask the Bologna fans to support and help them. I’ll be back soon with the team and all of you.”
