The Norwegian royal family has made headlines in national and foreign press on Tuesday, and not exactly for good reasons. Mariusthe son of the princess Mette-Marit contributed to his marriage with Haakonfrom a previous relationship, has been arrested and is in police custody. The young man, aged 27, is involved in a violent episode that occurred on the night of 1 to 2 August and in which a woman is also believed to be involved, whose identity is currently unknown.
According to the newspaper ‘Se og Hør’, the incident took place in an apartment in the capital, where they claim that Mette-Marit’s eldest son “psychologically and physically attacked” this woman. The alleged victim called the police but Marius had already fled when she arrived and was arrested shortly afterwards. The officers decided to take him into custody until the incident was clarified and they claim that he remained in police custody for 30 hours. His mother, informed of what happened, cancelled her trip to Paris to attend the opening of the Olympic Games, which was attended alone by her husband, Haakon of Norway.
The terrible news comes a few days after Marius himself confirmed his romantic relationship with Rebecca Helberg Arntsen via a photograph on social media. They appeared hugging each other on a beach in Lisbon: “Happy” and “My girl” were the words that accompanied the image. They met at Michaels, one of the trendy clubs in Oslo, where she works as a waitress. They share a passion for water sports, such as kitesurfing, and the sea.
Marius has become the ‘black sheep’ of the family. At 27 years old, he has already been involved in several scandals, such as a prison sentence for drug trafficking, a national security scandal for revealing images of the Royal Family or a crime against road safety just a few months ago. After this latest episode, the young man is with his mother at their usual residence awaiting a speedy trial.
