Manchester United have released their list of 25 players for the Premier League and there are two striking absences: Sergio Romero and Phil Jones. The Argentine goalkeeper already knew his secondary role during the transfer market, after the return of Dean Henderson and the continuity of David De Gea. In recent days he was close to leaving the club, but he will continue to belong to the Red Devils at least until December and will not be able to play any league games.
Same case as Phil Jones, although with differences. For example, it was renewed less than a year ago until 2023, despite the fact that it has not played any match with the Manchester United shirt since last January. With the competition he has between Bailly, Maguire and Lindelof, all of them ahead of Solskjaer's list of priorities, to which we must add the little physical regularity that Jones has, the decision to leave him off the list of 25 has been inevitable.
But everything goes further: when he was offered the renewal, Jones had the opportunity to accept in the contract a tribute match for serving more than a decade at the club (he signed in 2011 from Blackburn). However, he rejected, as he explained in his day The Athletic. And he did it with a phrase: “Who would come, besides my father and my mother?”
