Madrid will subsidize sporting events with 750,000 euros in 2022

The total amount of aid for municipal sports this year will reach 3.4 million, the highest in history

The Governing Board of the Madrid City Council has approved this Thursday an item of 750,000 euros, 50,000 euros more than the previous year, for the promotion and major sporting events during the 2021-22 season, in which the capital celebrates the designation as Capital World of Sport.

These new subsidies are added to those approved on March 31 to carry out sports and competition activities during this season worth 2,450,000 euros. In addition, a new subsidy is still pending for this season to carry out sports events, competitions and projects for women, which will have a budget of 200,000 euros and is expected to come out in the coming weeks.

In this way, the total sum of aid will be 3.4 million euros, the highest figure in the history of the Madrid City Council. Sports events of an inter-autonomous nature, with the participation of between 2 and 5 autonomous communities, will be eligible for this subsidy; national sports events, with a minimum participation of 6 autonomous communities; international sports events, with a minimum participation of 3 countries; and sports promotion events, where events that do not fall into the previous category, those of a local or regional nature, are considered.

This year it is expected to exceed the number of grants in 2021, which reached a record figure of 215, 50 more than in 2020, when a total of 165 grants were awarded in this line.

The delegate for Sport, Sofía Miranda, highlighted the efforts of the city council “which continues to be firmly committed to supporting and defending sport in Madrid”, and has assured that sporting events “are the best vehicle to have a positive projection of the city ​​of Madrid”.

“Being able to host great teams and great athletes here has a very positive impact to position Madrid within world sport, but also for the boys and girls who practice sports in our sports schools and who see themselves reflected in these sports stars”, Miranda reviewed.

Entities legally registered and recognized in their corresponding register with at least one year of seniority at the date of publication of this call in the Official Gazette of the Community of Madrid (BOCAM), and that have their registered office in the municipality of Madrid.

MUNICIPAL SPORTS IN CONSTANT GROWTH

In 2019, a total of 260 grants were awarded and the total amount of the call amounted to 1,774,000 euros; in 2020, the Sports Area awarded 535 grants after approving an amount of 2,170,000 euros; For its part, in 2021, 784 grants were awarded thanks to the call for 2,900,000 euros.

To all this, add the 4 million euros that in 2020 were granted through an extraordinary grant that the consistory launched to rescue grassroots sport in Madrid and collaborate with the viability and sustainability of Madrid clubs during confinement and the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
