Madrid will host the European Badminton 2022 from April 25 to 30

MADRID, 18 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The 2022 Absolute Badminton European Championship will be held at the Gallur Municipal Sports Center in Madrid from April 25 to 30, after “intense and fruitful negotiations” between the European Badminton Federation (Badminton Europe), the Spanish Federation of Badminton (FESBA) and the Madrid City Council, after the last-minute cancellation of the country that planned to host it.

The general secretary of Badminton Europe, Brian Agerbak, was “grateful” to FESBA for “stepping forward in such a short time and presenting a very competitive bid” for the European Championships. “We are pleased to bring this event to one of the great capitals of Europe and we are hopeful that this event can also mark Carolina Marin’s return from injury,” he noted.

“FESBA is a reliable partner and with its great experience in organizing major events I am sure that this will be just one of the many championships that will be played in Spain in the coming years”, he celebrated.

For his part, the president of FESBA, Andoni Azurmendi, stressed that “the fact that the Absolute European Championship is going to be held in Spain is a great organizational challenge” for the organization. “But at the same time it is a complete satisfaction. As we have already shown, we are amply qualified to do so and we appreciate the trust of the European Federation and the Spanish institutions that support us in these projects”, he assured.

Spain has just organized the Huelva 2021 Absolute and Senior World Championships, events that for the first time in history were held in the same venue and consecutively. In addition, the Huelva capital itself was the venue for the 2018 Absolute European Championship, a championship in which Carolina Marín won the continental title in front of her audience and in the pavilion that bears her name. Now, the three-time world champion could win her sixth consecutive European title in Madrid.

In addition, the Spanish leading role in the organization of tournaments continues in 2022, since Santander will host the Individual and Team Junior World Championships from October 17 to 30.
