Macua insists that “second parts were never good”

The name of Fernando García Macua has sounded for some time now among the possible candidates to attend the Athletic elections. It does not seem, based on his statements on TeleBilbao’s ‘Bilbosport’ program, that the Biscayan lawyer intends to take the step forward. His answer to the question in question, in any case, was not definitive.

“Yes, they have been encouraging me and they have encouraged me. It has been a rumor that seems to have been given credence and that has been very present in Athletic circles in recent weeks. I have always said that what I want is a Athletic open, an Athletic of all in which everyone, regardless of any other consideration, can consider it as their own”, argued Macua in the first instance.

After another series of previous explanations, the former Atletico president concluded that “we must know how to read and learn the lessons that the reality in which we live gives us and I took my reading from that situation. The years do not pass in vain. The purposes, the ideas and the illusion may be the same, but… The proverb usually contains very deep drops of wisdom and says that ‘second parts were never good.’ It’s for the good of Athletic. The worst thing that can happen to this club is to fall into complacency and lose self-demand”.

José Julián Lertxundi, the other former Atletico president invited to the aforementioned TeleBilbao program, was more forceful in his response to the question of whether he recommended Macua to run for the elections: “I love him too much for that. Athletic is an illusion, not An obsession. It’s difficult for anyone who turns illusion into obsession. You have to know how to turn the page. Fernando did a great job, left a great team and that team will be around for a long time”.

Lertxundi went on to point out that “Athletic is a permanent miracle: 120 years of a miracle. As a person who loves (Macua) to leave Athletic for the one who comes. From friendship and affection he told him to turn the page”.

Also interesting is Lertxundi’s own reflection on the electoral issue at the rojiblanco club: “The important thing is not that the best win, the important thing is that the best lose because the one who can beat the hell out of the one who wins is the one who loses and stories of these have occurred in Athletic. I knew how to leave from minute zero”.
