Spanish fencer Lucía Martín-Portugués won the bronze medal this Saturday at the Fencing World Cup being held in Istanbul, thus reinforcing her aspirations of qualifying for the next Olympic Games in Paris.
In the first round, Lucía Martín-Portugués beat Hungarian Suggar Battai 15-14. She then beat the Italian Sofia Ciaraglia 15-13 and in the round of 16 she did the same against the Hungarian Liza Pusztai (15-12). Already in the quarterfinals she finished off the Azerbaijani Anna Bashta (15-13), thus making up for her defeat in the World Cup in Athens.
And in the semifinal she fell to the French Manon ApithiBrunet (15-13), who was the subsequent winner of the competition held in Turkish lands. With this second medal for Lucía Martín-Portugués at the World Cup, the fencer from the Oso y Madroño Fencing Club has achieved something unprecedented in Spanish women’s saber.
