Lothar Matthäus keeps putting his finger on Bayern Munich’s sore spot. After harshly criticizing the Bavarian defense after the thrashing conceded by the champion against newly promoted Bochum (4-2), the German legend returned to the fray, this time hitting Lucas Hernández. From Matthäus’ point of view, the most expensive signing in Bayern’s history is still not up to the level of a Bayern who came to pay a total of 80 million euros to get their services.
“He was unlucky to get injured, but he doesn’t seem like a differential player to me,” Matthäus was quoted in the German newspaper image. “He has no rhythm and shows weaknesses in the game. More was expected of him after the investment made by Bayern”underlined the world champion in 1990. A week ago, Lothar had already dedicated the following sentence to the former Atlético de Madrid: “Lucas continues to have many deficits. It was the most expensive signing in the history of Bayern, it is normal that those responsible expect more from him.”.
On Süle, who will join Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season as a free agent, Matthäus added: “His departure is not for money or anything like that. I know. What happens is that he has never felt loved by the club’s board. Sometimes professional footballers need to feel valued too. Salihamidzic (Bayern’s sports director) never positioned himself in favor of him. He has always performed well. Not very good, but good. It is international and very important for the team. Bayern loses a key piece”.
As a result of Matthäus’ statements, Salihamidzic himself was forced to react and said the following in DAZN: “Lothar has to say something, of course. He is an expert, but his words do not concern me.”. Matthäus, who currently works as an analyst for different media, was not intimidated by the Munich boss and replied: “My job as a journalist is to evaluate the performances. From his fierce reaction to my statements, you can see that he is moved. Criticism of the defense hurts him because Hasan knows it: it’s the truth.”.
