Letizia and her daughters travel without Don Felipe to the land of Doña Sofía

The death this week of Juan Gomez-Acebo, cousin of Felipe VI, caught the Kings and their family on vacation, in the middle of those days that Their Majesties reserve for themselves and that they try to wear in the midst of his institutional obligations. In fact, the King reappeared this Thursday in the Dominican Republic to attend the inauguration of the president. The monarch travelled without Letizia, who took the opportunity to escape with her daughters to Greece, according to reports.

This is how the Royal Family’s summer has been going, packed with events such as the Olympic Games and the European Championship in Germany. Queen Letizia, Infanta Sofia and her older sister Princess Leonor, the King and also Queen Sofia, the Queen Emeritus, who replaced Felipe and Letizia at the closing ceremony, have all visited Paris. However, they have not all gone together. In Berlin, it was the youngest of the kings who accompanied her father to celebrate the triumph of La Roja.

There is also the visit to Mallorca by Queen Letizia to attend what is already a custom: the Atlàntida Mallorca Film, where she coincided with the award-winning Michael Douglas. The King and Queen, Queen Sofia, Leonor and Sofia and Aunt Pecu (Irene of Greece) met in Palma to dine together; and the Monarch dedicated some of his days to sailing after receiving the President of the Government on the Island and celebrating the traditional reception with Balearic society in Marivent.

I, to Santo Domingo, and you to Greece

But, as is almost always the case, the royals’ real holidays, the so-called private holidays, usually take place far from the island and the spotlight. We know, however, that on this occasion the chosen destination has been the country of Queen Sofia. The Queen and her daughters are in Greece, where they have travelled by plane, according to reports. Abc, while Don Felipe traveled to greet the Dominican Head of State, Luis Abinader, in Santo Domingo, where the Monarch showed off a guayabera and an enviable tan. It is expected that once his institutional commitments are over, he will travel with his wife and daughters.

The Mediterranean is one of the Kings’ regular destinations, as far as we know, since there is no official information about these private destinations. We do know, however, that apart from Mallorca, where they always go for a few days, they have taken cruises along the Amalfi coast and the Adriatic Sea, as in 2016, or stayed on the Côte d’Azur and Cabo de Gata. They were in Mykonos six years ago; we also know that they spent years in Istanbul. Other holiday destinations of Their Majesties, which have been revealed, are New York or neighbouring Portugal.
