Leo Borg: “I'm getting judged for my tennis and not for being Bjorn Borg's son”

Leo Borg is already looking forward to the next tournaments that he will play during these next two weeks in Marbella. The young Swedish tennis player will dispute the Marbella Challenger since Tuesday and next week he will fight to enter the final draw of the Andalusia Open at the age of 17, where he wants to remove the mantra of being the son of legend Bjorn Borg.

In an interview with the ITF website, Leo himself confessed that, little by little, people talk about him more for his tennis than for being 'the son of', although he knows that he will have to deal with all his career with it. “I'm getting people to judge me more for my tennis and not just for being Bjorn Borg's son. I'm trying to climb to the top and my game still has a long way to go. Before, comparison with my father was very possible. It mattered because it was normal, but now I think that people recognize me more and don't necessarily see my father in me. I know that will follow me my whole life, at least when I play tennis and it is something I will have to deal with. I've never seen it as difficult, I just have to deal with it.

Leo Borg looks optimistically at the next two tournaments in Marbella and ensures that he arrives at both events at a high level both in terms of play and physically. “I am very proud to receive invitations to these great tournaments. I have played on the Challeger Tour before but the Andalucía Open is very important to me. I am preparing very well and I am looking forward to playing. Now I am at my best level. I had trouble reaching it in other tournaments, but now I feel good with my tennis and physically. I am prepared, I know that I can play well and compete against the greats and I am looking forward to doing so. It is more of an opportunity than anything else. I don't put pressure on myself, I just want to see my level. “

The young tennis player also confessed that he started in football, but that he decided to switch to tennis after discovering it and also knowing that he could count on the help of his father. “I was playing soccer until I was 11 or 12 years old and I liked it a lot but then I decided to play tennis because I felt good and I thought I would have a good future because I was improving a lot. I felt that I liked tennis more and more and, since my father had played tennis, I knew that I could have his help, so I decided to continue. “

Leo Borg has already made his mark in numerous ITF tournaments such as Porto Alegre, where he managed to clinch the title. “Porto Alegre has been the biggest tournament I have won so far. It meant a lot to me and my father was very happy to see me play. He believes that I can play tennis very well, and that is always nice to hear. I hadn't won so many tournaments or matches for months and then I started fighting for it and I realized that I am good and how well I can play, and I am grateful for that. “

Gone are the problems that Borg had to go through, which is already turning the page and setting new challenges for the future. “In the past I had problems with my serve and my fitness, but I have worked a lot on it and that has helped me. I was not fast enough or strong enough, but I have fixed it. I feel like I am in great shape. and playing really good tennis, and that's what I'm concentrating on. Grand Slam juniors are important, but I think I can level up and take on professionals. ”Leo wants the Borg saga to continue to be successful in the tennis world.
