Leeds sack Marcelo Bielsa

MADRID, 27 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Leeds United announced this Sunday the dismissal of Argentine Marcelo Bielsa as coach of the first team, after more than three and a half years in charge, due to poor results, after the team had linked six days without winning and four defeats consecutive, the last of them on Saturday against Tottenham (0-4), in the Premier League.

“This has been the most difficult decision I have had to make during my tenure at Leeds United, considering how successful Marcelo has been at the club,” Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani said, noting that the manager de Rosario “changed the culture of the club” and gave it “a winning mentality”.

“The moments created, particularly in the 2019-20 season with promotion to the Premier League, will live long in our memories. However, I have to act in the best interests of the club and believe a change is required to secure our status in the Premier League. Recent results and performances have not lived up to our expectations.”

Leeds have not won since January 16 and have suffered five defeats in their last six games in domestic competition, in which they are sixteenth (23) with only two points above the relegation zone.

Bielsa, 66, joined the English club in June 2018. He led the ‘Whites’ to the Championship promotion ‘Playoffs’ in his first season, and in the second he completed the team’s return to the Premier by first time in 16 years.

For his part, the club’s director of football, the Spanish Víctor Orta, highlighted the “great impact” of the Argentine in the entity. “He has created a legacy, overseeing major infrastructure improvements at Thorp Arch, bringing fans and players together, and providing a clear path for young players to transition into the first team,” he noted.
