The Latvian basketball player Janis Timma was found dead at the age of 32 on a street in Moscow (Russia), near a central hotel in the capital, the preliminary cause of death being suicide, according to the Russian news agency reported this Tuesday. TASS.
Timma began his basketball career in his native Latvia, playing for Daugavpils Kraslava, DU Hansabanka, BA Riga, BA Keizamezs Riga, Barons Riga, Liepajas Lauvas, Ventspils and VEF Riga, where he made his Eurocup debut in the 2014 season/ 15. He spent two more seasons in the Eurocup with the Russian team Zenit St. Petersburg.
The Baltic player also played five EuroLeague campaigns with Baskonia, Olympiacos, Khimki and UNICS Kazan. Last season, Timma played for Turkish side Darüssafaka and Monbus Obradoiro. He was also called to defend the Latvian national team jersey.
“We are all shocked and sad to hear the tragic news (…). We will always remember him for his good heart and his smile,” Olympiacos said on their social networks. “All our support to the family and friends of Janis Timma. May he rest in peace,” Baskonia added in another press release.
“We would like to express our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Janis Timma, who tragically passed away last night in Moscow,” Zenit said. Thus, the Euroleague announced that a minute of silence will be held in his memory before all the matches on matchday 16 of said competition and matchday 12 of the Eurocup.
